Effect of common fir-tree mistletoe (Viscum album ssp. abietis) on tree-ring widths of silver fir (Abies
Abstract
Investigations were carried out in silver fir forests in Kostrza Forest Division, Limanowa Forest District, in order to determine how common mistletoe (Viscum album L. ssp. abietis (Wiesb.) Janch.) affects the radial growth of the silver fir (Abies alba Mill.). The trees in different degree of inhabiting by half-parasite were selected for the study. Abies alba infected at low degree (class 1) showed no decrease of tree-ring widths while the mistletoe parasitism consequences were not significant. However at the higher levels of fir crowns colonization (classes 2 and 3) the presence of white mistletoe significantly reduced annual tree-ring widths. During water deficiency period the common fir mistletoe, due to its high water transpiration, could be an important factor contributing to the silver fir decay.
