Population of oak powdery mildew in western Poland
Abstract
Introduction. Oak powdery mildew (Erysiphe alphitoides) is a major foliar pathogen of Quercus robur often infecting entire tree stands. It can significantly reduce tree growth and trigger tree decline. Studies on the inter-species variability within Erysiphe spp. and intra-species variability within E. alphitoides are rare. Objective. Evaluation of an inter-species variability within Erysiphe spp. and intra-species variability within E. alphitoides from Q. robur in western Poland.
Material and methods. Material consisted of leaves of Q. robur infected by E. alphitoides from western Poland. DNA of E. alphitoides was extracted and amplified. The 1/2 ITS rDNA was sequenced and compared with DNA of reference sequences of E. alphitoides.
Results. The studied isolates were 98–100% homologous to E. alphitoides KP686269 from NCBI.
Conclusions. Results demonstrate the presence of E. alphitoide on leaves of Q. robur in western Poland. There was small intra-species variability of E. alphitoides and big genetical homogeneity in majority of E. alphitoides isolates.
