The effect of fir broom rust (Melampsorella caryophyllacearum (DC.) Schröt.) on the silver fir tree ring widths
Abstract
Dendrochronological methods have been used to determine the effect of Melampsorella caryophyllacearum (DC.) Schröt. on the annual tree-ring widths of Abies alba Mill. originated from Bandrów Forest District, Ustrzyki Dolne Forest Division. The chronologies of trees with fir broom rust were divided into 6 eleven years old time periods. It has been proved that in the first 4 periods of life, covering 50 years of the tree's life, the fir cancer did not significantly affect the width of annual tree-rings. Later the mature trees (4 and 5 section of chronology) with fir broom rust had displayed a significant, gradual decrease in the widths of the annual tree-rings by 12% and 24% to compare to healthy trees.
