CHANGES IN VOLUME, GRADE AND VALUE IN POPLAR TIMBER DEPENDING ON TIMBER SIZE VARIANTS
The aim of the paper was to analyse the impact of different cut-to-length variants on changes in the volume, grade and value of poplar timber. The impact has been determined based on analyses of 50 poplars harvested as long timber. Next, a hypothetical division of long timber into four length variants was performed: 3-meter, 4-meter, 5-meter, and 6-meter logs. The assortments remaining after cutting were qualified as medium-sized timber, either S2 or S4. The study material was harvested in the Czarnobór Forest District. As a result of cutting the long timber into logs, there was a change in the share of individual grades represented, with some of the timber classified to higher grades. However, this did not increase the timber value. Instead, cutting the timber into logs led to a decrease in its overall value. The longer the logs, the greater the decrease in value,
ranging from 8.85% for 3-m logs to 18.47% for 6-m logs. Furthermore, the volume of the logs was lower compared to the long timber they were obtained from. The study demonstrated that long timber is the most advantageous form in terms of its volume, shares of individual grades and overall value.
