Hemispherical canopy photos in the assessment of the impact of canopy closure on the plant species composition in the selected old tree stands of Kampinoski National Park
Abstract
The scope of the study included hemispherical photos, phytosociological relèves and assessment of the canopy closure and the Shannon-Wiener diversity index. The analysis showed differences in the canopy closure between stands growing in deciduous mixed mesic forest and coniferous mixed mesic forest habitats, however, it did not confirm a statistically significant effect of the canopy closure on the number of plant species under the given conditions describing the research plots. It has been shown that the high degree of naturalness of 200-year-old stands, expressed by the number of typically forest plant species, does not mean a large number of plants found in the forest floor. The study also noted the limited possibility of using the ecological Ellenberg index numbers in the assessment of the trophicity of forest habitats.
