Wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz) – silviculture treatments in Poland, recommendations for forest practice
Abstract
Introduction. Wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz) is a widely distributed species across Europe. In Poland, it grows mainly in regions of Wielkopolska, and Pomerania, and in lower parts of Sudetes and Carpathian Mts. Wild service tree occupies deep fertile soils, but
can also tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, from chalky, superficially, dry to temporarily waterlogged soils.
The aim of the study and material. The evaluation of the silviculture possibilities of propagation of wild service tree in Polish conditions and recommendations for forest practice will enable the establishment of seed plantations using selected plant material. In 2009 there were harvested seeds of 104 families, as the basis of the establishment of experimental plots. Silviculture recommendations for forest practice were supported by soil analysis conditions.
Conclusions. In Poland, the most valuable provenances of Wild service tree are recomended to use for future propagation: Rogoźno-Jamy, Goraj, Bytyń, Piaski, Jawor, Białowodzka Góra, Kamień Śląski. The use of local genetic material of wild service tree populations is suggested.
