OUTBREAKS OF PINE DEFOLIATORS IN THE PUSZCZA NOTECKA FOREST COMPLEX – HISTORY, PREDICTION AND PREVENTIVE MEASURES
Abstract
The pine beauty moth outbreak in 1922–1924 led to the formation of a large complex of even-aged pine
monocultures in the Puszcza Notecka forest complex, which are constantly exposed to outbreaks of different
pine defoliators. Outbreaks occur in outbreak foci, which are most often divided into permanent, primary,
secondary and migratory. Understanding the differences between them is important for their localization and
determining the conditions triggering outbreaks, the possibilities of forecasting and counteracting. The collected
databases for the period 1946-2004 enabled locating 45, 108, 204 and 554 permanent outbreak foci of
the pine beauty moth, pine looper, pine-tree lappet moth and nun moth, respectively, in the Puszcza Notecka
forest complex. The methodological assumptions adopted at that time were used for determining outbreak
foci of the main pine defoliators in forests throughout the country. As a result of statistical analyses, the environmental
characteristics of the outbreak foci of different foliophagous species and the conditions triggering
their outbreaks were determined. A number of silvicultural and forest protection measures were proposed for
preventing outbreaks and enhancing the resistance of the pine stands.
